India Shawn is such a lovergirl, and that’s always been reflected in her music. Though the title of her new EP is Subject To Change, that has stayed constant. On this six-song project, she continues singing about the range of feelings and emotions that accompany relationships and the ebb and flow of it all.
The EP executive produced by D’Mile — who also helmed her 2022 debut album BEFORE WE GO (DEEPER) — opens with India’s latest single “Marmalade.” She is feeling herself, and so is a man who’s into her. India knows how sweet it is and encourages him to make his next move his best move. “Brown sugar, babe, in front of your face / You’re dying for a slice / Of heaven inside my candy world / Come get you a taste of marmalade,” she coos on the second verse of the carefree groove that blends ’80s R&B, pop and funk.
The visual for “Marmalade” leans into the disco era, and India Shawn plays a seductive songstress, which isn’t a stretch for the beauty. While she performs in a nightclub filled with patrons decked out in afros, bellbottoms and rhinestones, she captures the attention of a gentleman who is there with his lady. It’s evident that he won’t be leaving with his girl, however, as he is transfixed on India.
When she gets to the pre-chorus where she sings, “What you wanna do, my love? / I’m the girl you’ve been dreaming of / So what you wanna do, my love? / Show me what I’ve been dreaming of,” that triggers him. He fantasizes about getting hot and heavy with the singer. He snaps back to reality just in time to see his woman storm off. India is unconcerned and busy being the life of the party and reveling under the disco ball.
India Shawn keeps on falling on “’Til Infinity,” delivering a song that sounds like the lovechild of ’70s yacht rock and alt-soul. The good vibes continue as she swerves into the sticky-sweet concoction “Cotton Candy Blvd” with Lucky Daye riding shotgun and switches lanes into a love scene on “Rain On Me” before hitting the brakes on a situationship between friends on “Kill Switch.” The EP concludes with the song “Multiplicity,” and India kicking a lover who can’t make up his mind to the curb. She loves herself more than she loves him and chooses accordingly since he can’t.
Subject To Change takes listeners on the roller coaster ride that is modern relationships. Our main character India Shawn remains a lovergirl throughout, optimistic about the possibility of finding and falling in love, yet rooted in the reality that people and feelings change.
