Chris Brown is back with new music just in time for summer. The superstar singer has dropped his 12th studio album BROWN, an expansive 27-track project whose title is not only his last name but also an acronym meaning “Break Rules Only When Necessary.” That phrase lays the foundation for the album, which finds Breezy leaning into a classic R&B/soul-inspired sound while staying true to himself.

Even the cover art for BROWN shows Chris relaxing in a reclined pose — often referred to as the “R&B Lean” — a visual reference to iconic album covers by legends such as Teddy Pendergrass (It’s Time For Love), Luther Vandross (Give Me The Reason) and Michael Jackson (Thriller). The image of Chris Brown is a nostalgic nod to his forefathers and a way for him to assert himself as a legend of his generation.

BROWN delivers many of the melodic and vocal-driven elements longtime fans have come to expect from CB. Highlighted by his viral summer 2025 hit “It Depends” featuring Bryson Tiller and the retro soul and blues-inspired single “Fallin’” featuring Leon Thomas, the project blends uptempo records, smooth R&B and slow jams across its lengthy tracklist.

Chris Brown gets some things off his chest on the album opener “Leave Me Alone.” The song features an extended instrumental intro and his personal manifesto. He declares in the first verse, “Leave me alone and let me breathe for a second / Everybody got opinions, but they missing the message.” The 37-year-old singer-songwriter is tired of people telling him how to live his life and doesn’t waver throughout the six-minute song that concludes with the lyric, “Just let me be / I wrote this life for me.”

Tracks like “Obvious” stand out early with its sensual production and talk box effect, while “It’s Not You It’s Me” finds Brown diving deeper into traditional R&B love song territory with layered vocals and more emotional songwriting. Meanwhile, the cinematic visual for “Fallin’” caught fans’ attention with its dark Southern gothic aesthetic reminiscent of the feature film Sinners.

The album includes numerous guests from R&B and hip-hop, but the R&B brotherhood was locked in and represented well for the genre. Lucky Daye makes for quite an exciting and enticing match with Breezy on “Slow Jamz.” Fridayy’s feature on “Perfect Timing” blends in well with the crooner. Frequent collaborator Tank co-stars in the “Fallin’” clip and joins Chris on the track “#BODYGOALS.” Their latest link-up continues to display the vocal chemistry the two artists have become known for over the years and has the potential to be another viral smash for both singers.

BROWN is a mixed bag that could have benefited from the tracklist being pared down, but it’s still a solid addition to Chris Brown’s discography. He doesn’t break rules or any new ground here, but he does stand his ground and play his position. The album tees up his highly anticipated The R&B Tour, which he’ll be co-headlining with Usher this summer and fall, and promises to be a blockbuster.
