Malaysian singer-songwriter Yuna is close to releasing her new EP The Valour Hour after teasing the set with singles “if you don’t love me” and “believer” and a special concert in her home country in February. But she has more for us before the set’s arrival as she releases her latest single “wasteland.”
Yuna returns to her signature quiet power on “wasteland.” Production-wise, the singer utilizes a backdrop of gentle, simple guitar and minor synth chords to bring across the song’s melancholy vibes. The soundscape manages to draw us in, but it’s Yuna’s own vocals and lyrics that truly paint the picture.
The song finds her heartbroken and hopeless as she mourns a love that felt promising but ultimately has left her stranded with heartache and raw feelings. She sings of the sacrifices and compromises she’s made for love and the state it’s left her in.
“No one could tell me I was just idling / There ain’t nobody else / I wanna call mine,” she sings at one point. “My soul is empty, so is my room, it’s where you have left me / In your wasteland.”
We’ve already received three of the five songs that will be featured on The Valour Hour. And if the other two songs — with the intriguing titles “sky is red” and “ready to move” — sound as good as what we’ve heard, then we’re in for an enthralling experience.
