PJ Morton To Express His Duality On Double Album ‘Saturday Night, Sunday Morning’ & Drops New Gospel Single ‘Mercy’

PJ Morton is comfortable making music in multiple genres, but his sweet spot is R&B and gospel. He’s released albums in both genres and has the GRAMMY Awards to prove it. For his next project, though, he’s not separating his passions but, instead, bringing them together. This Juneteenth, PJ will release the double album Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, led by the singles “Mutual” and “Mercy.”

The collection, which borrows its title from Morton’s 2024 memoir Saturday Night, Sunday Morning: Staying True To Myself From The Pews To The Stage, will be split into two halves. The 18-track recording will feature nine songs on the R&B/soul side, “Saturday Night,” and nine songs on the gospel side, “Sunday Morning.” After dropping the love song “Mutual” first, PJ quickly follows up with the gospel number “Mercy,” in which he praises God for the bottomless blessings he receives despite himself.

PJ Morton is thankful to the Most High for His grace and favor on “Mercy,” espcially during those times in his life when he has fallen short. “Here You go again / Making a way for me,” he marvels on the first verse, speaking directly to the Lord. He continues his talk with God on the second verse, singing, “And I don’t understand why ’cause I know I don’t deserve it / I failed so many times, but You still think I’m worth it.”

Morton has an attitude of gratitude on the chorus. “I can’t thank You enough / You keep showing up for me / For me, oh, for me / The unmerited favor / You freely bestow on me / Mercy,” he croons.

Much like the visualizer for “Mutual,” PJ keeps it simple with a single-location shoot for the “Mercy” visualizer that basically brings the single’s cover image to life. He’s filmed in his Sunday best outside of a church on a beautiful, sunny day. For the majority of the clip, he’s standing in front of the church with the cross at the roof visible above his head. The symbolism of the imagery is so transfixing that you’ll almost miss the lyrics displayed across the bottom of the screen on your first watch.

When it came to his decision to create Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, it was much deeper than genre for the multitalented artist.

“I’d always been made to choose. Growing up in church, I loved gospel music. You could feel it in your soul. But R&B and soul music, that got me too,” PJ Morton says in his voiceover to the trailer for the double album.

“There was always an unspoken rule that you had to choose one or the other. But is that a true reflection of life? Are we all one thing all the time? Is the soundtrack the same for having a worship experience with God as it is for falling in love?” he asks as archival footage of Black music legends Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Al Green and D’Angelo — all of whom were rooted in the church — plays. “I’ve been fortunate enough to exist in many of these spaces authentically. I was the same person when I wrote ‘Let Go Let God’ as I was when I wrote ‘Say So.’ I didn’t want to choose this time. I’m both Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.”

PJ Morton may ruffle some feathers with this project that blends the secular with the sanctified, but he knows who he is, Whose he is and is staying true to both.

Saturday Night, Sunday Morning is scheduled to arrive on Friday, June 19th, right in the middle of Black Music Month. The collection will be independently released on Morton Records in association with SRG-ILS Group.

Joining PJ on the set will be two previous collaborators. After working together on the track “Beautiful Day” for his album Foreverland (and contributing horns to “Mutual”), trumpeteer Keyon Harrold will be featured on the song “Mess.” British singer Rukhsana Merrise, who was accompanied by Morton on the remix to her 2019 single “Today,” will be his guest on “Autopsy.”
