It’s GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter Kehlani’s 31st birthday! However, she’s the one giving a very special gift to fans with the release of her self-titled album. Kehlani solidifies the Oakland native’s R&B era, led by her instant classic “Folded” and the follow-up single “Out The Window,” both of which hit the Billboard Hot 100. The massive success of “Folded” set the tone and direction for the 17-track collection. With legendary features, heavenly vocals and immaculate production, Kehlani’s self-titled set is her best work yet.

Kehlani opens with “Intro,” a poem recited by the singer, in a nod to the intro on her debut album SweetSexySavage, which was recited by Reyna Biddy. “You’re about to hear a heart that’s been stretched, healed and reborn,” she said, reflecting on her growth. “A voice stepping into its truth with no fear, no filter and no apologies. I am Kehlani,” she calmly yet boldly declared.

After that introduction, Kehlani and Lil Wayne set the album off on “Anotha Luva.” Co-produced by Rich Harrison and Khris Riddick-Tynes (who executive-produced the album), the catchy tune about craving an old flame features an old-school sample, go-go drums and horns that bring to mind Harrison’s early 2000s work with Amerie. The hip-hop soul sound fits Kehlani like a bodycon dress, while Weezy totally slides on his verse. Kehlani delivers riffs, runs and vocal layering that make it clear that she is certainly a student of the craft.

The hip-hop soul vibes continue on “No Such Thing” with a similar feel to the previous track and a feature from Clipse. Kehlani revels in finding the love that she deserves atop uptempo instrumentation and another sample flip. The song’s ’90s flavor, lovergirl lyrics and production by Pop & Oak help make it one of many standout cuts on the album.

Kehlani’s mega-hit “Folded” comes next on the tracklist to change the tempo and set up another standout: her highly anticipated Brandy collab “I Need You,” a yearning, soul-filled number. Not many can hold their own on a track with the Vocal Bible herself, but Kehlani matches her vocal energy. The pair team up to harmonize, riff and even navigate key changes together gracefully. It’s another moment on the album that shows how Kehlani is also a student of the genre and its greats.

She goes from yearning for an ex to yearning for sex on “Oooh.” The sensual slow jam is tailor-made for late-night playlists and Quiet Storm radio. Kehlani’s velvety vocals are captivating, and their vocal control is in full effect with just the right amount of falsetto. The singer plays with her levels, getting quieter and softer, adding to the sensuality of the track, which closes with a crazy guitar solo vamp.

We then go “Back And Forth” with Kehlani and Missy Elliott. The album’s third single is a cute, upbeat bop with a catchy hook. When she’s not shouting “New Kehlani!” Missy makes sure to shout out her girl Aaliyah. The song falls in step with the overall throwback vibe of the project.

The killer collabs and standout moments keep coming with the Usher-featuring cut “Shoulda Never.” Produced by Babyface and Riddick-Tynes, the melody and beat are infectious. Kehlani and Usher share the verses and harmonize about wishing they’d known better about a toxic lover. The song even includes a rap verse from the two singers on the bridge — again, reminiscent of an early aughts R&B joint.

Later on Kehlani, she keeps it 2000s on “Call Me Back,” which features T-Pain and Lil Jon. The two sing and rap about their girl not returning their calls because she’d rather be out having fun, and Kehlani is the girl in question. The beat will make you want to snap your fingers, do your step and hit your favorite dance from that era.

Cardi B comes through to spit hot fire on “Pocket,” marking the third collab from the duo. The hook to the upbeat, flirty song sounds just like a call-and-response chant Kehlani could use while performing, so make sure to memorize it and get ready for any future tour plans.

Other notable guests on the album are Big Sean (“Lights On”) and Leon Thomas (“Sweet Nuthins”). Kehlani has truly grown from her debut album, which had no features, to now, with nine major collaborations, including artists who first inspired her.

The album’s closing track, “Unlearn,” might be one of Kehlani’s best. It’s a real, raw R&B ballad that is unapologetically Kehlani, embodying the self-titled project. It may remind true fans of “As I Am” or “Hold Me By The Heart” from her previous albums with its heartfelt lyrics and smooth vocals.

“I got a lot to unlearn about me / But I’ll do the work if you still believe / I’ll keep tryna unlearn the hurt / Give me your love, I’ll show what it’s worth / Don’t go, stay right here,” she sings sentimentally. The song almost feels like a love letter to her longtime fans.

This project is quite an achievement for Kehlani. It proves that she knows what she’s doing and who she is — as an artist and as an individual. The album reflects her versatility, showing that she can give listeners a soft ballad, an upbeat club track or a sensual slow jam and do it all extremely well. Kehlani is a masterclass in R&B and a gift to everyone who holds the beloved genre dear.
