With the way things are going in the world these days, we’re all probably in need of a little couch time with our therapist of choice. Perhaps that’s why so many artists are touching on the need to protect their mental health in these crazy times. Durand Bernarr got the memo, and he’s addressing it on “AM I OKAY?!,” the latest single from his upcoming album BERNARR.

Like “Wild Ride” before it, “AM I OKAY?!” feels a bit more low-key than we’re accustomed to from Durand. That is perhaps due to the brooding instrumental, which is heavy on the electric guitar and bass, as it channels a bit of moody funk to express the unease that the singer is feeling on the track.

He frames the song as a conversation with his therapist, at one point even calling the doctor to help him make sense of it all. But he gets to the heart of the matter on the second verse, singing, “I think I ran out of f**ks / ’Cause something ’bout it don’t make sense / And I can’t care no more / It got my heart in a rope / Crying river where I, I couldn’t swim away / Would you pull me up?”

The world-weary vibe of the song is sure to resonate with those of us who are trying to reckon with a world that, quite honestly, doesn’t make much sense these days. We’ll have to wait and see how it fits in with the rest of BERNARR. Luckily, our wait will soon be over as the album arrives next Friday, May 1st.
