Since winning season 29 of The Voice, Alexia Jayy has gone from making history on that stage to performing on stages coast to coast. In the past week alone, the powerhouse vocalist made her debut at the Blue Note Los Angeles and sang on The Today Show in New York City. While in NYC and hanging out at 30 Rock, she was invited to perform her new single “Rent Free” on The Kelly Clarkson Show this week.
Backed by The Kelly Clarkson Show’s house band, Alexia looked like a golden lady draped in a gold caftan and pants set and rocking a big blonde ’fro. She proceeded to sing “Rent Free” like the rent was due. When it came time for her to sing, “’Cause I live rent free in your head,” Alexia threw her head back and belted the lyric from her core. Though she only sang the first verse before jumping to the bridge on this shortened version, her voice had the studio audience and viewers at home transfixed.
Alexia reunited with host Kelly Clarkson during a post-performance interview. Clarkson was one of the coaches on The Voice this season and the first coach to turn their chair during the singer’s blind audition, but Jayy eventually chose to join Adam Levine’s team. The pair joked about Alexia’s son helping her to pick Adam after John Legend asked him about his favorite artist, and the child answered Maroon 5.
Kelly asked Alexia about the inspiration for “Rent Free” and gave her props on the track. “The song is great, but you can sing anything. Please don’t cover my songs,” the American Idol winner joked. “I’m just kidding! I am totally kidding. I would love for you—you would tear them up. I love your voice so much.”
The two musical mamas traded cute stories about their kids before circling back to “Rent Free.” Alexia assured fans who can’t get enough of her that an album is, in fact, on the way. “I’m working, working, working. I hope to give y’all something real good,” she said as the interview ended.
We don’t know when or where Alexia Jayy will pop up on stage next, but we can’t wait to see and hear her when she does.
