This past September, Thundercat broke his five-year hiatus from releasing solo material to give us his singles “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time” and “Children Of The Baked Potato,” teasing fans with the possibility of a fuller body of work coming in the near future. Now we know that the fuller work will be his upcoming album Distracted, set for release this April. To help get us ready for it, the singer-songwriter and kickass bass player has dropped the Lil Yachty-featuring single “I Did This To Myself.”
Produced by Flying Lotus, the song has the playfully complex sound that we’d expect from the two artists. It begins with a kick drum, snare, hi-hat and funky, jazzy bass line that leads us into the party. After a spoken intro that puts in the middle of the action, the song explodes into melodic keys as the groove switches up to accommodate Thundercat’s signature falsetto, though the funky bass-and-drum combo is revisited for Yachty’s rap.
Lyrically, the song doesn’t follow a typical song structure as it mainly allows the performer to bemoan how foolish a flame has him feeling as he spends all his money trying to keep her happy. He eventually comes to the realization that the situation is all his fault, however, for even entertaining it. “She gets everything she wants / It wouldn’t matter if it came from me / Why am I paying so much? / I swear I just got here,” he sings at one point. “Give her everything she wants / ’Cause that’s just how it goes / I did this to myself.”
Yachty pops in for a quick hello near the song’s end as he calls out the hottie about her influencing ways as he shuns the disingenuity of her content-creating lifestyle. “B***h, stop actin’ like you got a real job,” he jabs. “Takin’ those pics in a bra shouldn’t jam your schedule / We made plans twice and it’s unsuccessful.”
Yachty isn’t the only feature that will appear on Distracted. Thundercat has amassed quite the lineup for the set, including a previously unreleased collaboration with his late friend Mac Miller. Other notable names showing up to jam with the star include Willow, A$AP Rocky, Tame Impala and Channel Tres.
