The biggest part of the secret to SAULT — that the soulful outfit consists mainly of musical couple Inflo and Cleo Sol and an array of collaborators — has been out of the bag for quite some time. Still, the band manages to catch us by surprise. That’s because the prolific group continues to churn out work on a consistent basis with little to no warning. While we were still basking in the glow of last year’s 10 just months after finally receiving a proper version of Acts Of Faith, it seems that SAULT was already planning their next move. And now we know what that move was with the release of their 13th studio album Chapter 1.
The collection continues the group’s tradition of delving into the past and looking to the future with tracks that sound like they could’ve been on an album from yesteryear or today. Inflo and Cleo Sol are, of course, featured all over the set as they provide the driving force behind the music, which is evident on the psychedelic soul of songs such as openers “God, Protect Me From My Enemies” and the set’s title track.
However, they acquiesce more control than ever as they bring in legendary producers (and SAULT superfans) Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on a good portion of the album’s 10 tracks — including standouts “Good Things Will Come After The Pressure,” “Love Does Not Equal Pain” and “Don’t Worry About What You Can’t Control.” Elsewhere, singer-songwriter Jack Peñate also shows up to add his voice and talent to the project’s tapestry.
These collaborations don’t distract from the set’s overall vision, which is lighter on lyrics than previous outings. Instead, the song titles are mostly repeated like chants encouraging the listener to internalize them and move forward with the sentiments in their hearts. What the songs lack in lyrical content, however, is supplied by expansive instrumentals that incorporate strings, flutes, buzzing electric guitars, jangly guitar riffs, beautifully layered backgrounds and other elements. These choices make the record feel reminiscent of acts like Rotary Connection (and, in turn, early Minnie Riperton) and Sly And The Family Stone.
Chapter 1 might not be the beginning for SAULT, but it is perhaps a refresh for the outfit as they continue to keep us on our toes.
