We’re just a few weeks away from the release of Waves, the upcoming album from our chilled-out soul trio Moonchild. The set looks to be offering up inspirational and motivational vibes based on the collections of singles we've received so far — “Not Sorry,” “Ride The Wave,” “Strong” and “For Yourself.” They keep that message and add collaborators D Smoke and Robert Glasper on the set’s latest single “Up From Here.”
“Up From Here” once again immerses Moonchild in the lush, calming sound that they’ve become known for, though this time around Glasper adds his own jazzy keys and flourishes into the brew. There’s also more of a hip-hop element brought into the mix thanks to heavier drummers and a stuttering rhythm that speaks to the song’s themes.
Lyrically, the song is about working your way back up from the bottom, which lead singer Amber Navran expresses with an inspiring chorus. “Already know what it means to lose / Already know what it means / Nothing can touch me / It’s only up from here / Already know what it means to hurt / Already know what it means / Nothing can touch me / It’s only up from here,” she sings.
While Amber provides the chorus and riffs until the close of the song, D Smoke provides lyrical heft with the track’s opening verse that takes listeners from dire straits to hopeful beginnings. “Things that I can change, I affect change,” he rhymes at one point. “But if I can’t, guess I gotta go accept fate like / Love lost, use pain to fuel old school cause / Use anger to begin my process / Endangered, but I still ain’t lost.”
