When two of the biggest stars in music are set to star in a new movie, you kinda expect them to tap into their talents both onscreen and in the studio. So, of course, we were hoping that Kelly Rowland and Method Man spent some time in the booth over the course of filming their upcoming romantic comedy Relationship Goals. Our hopes have come true as the two release their new collaboration “Complicated.”
The song, produced by Jack Dine, has a throwback feel. It touches the hallmarks of 2000s-era hip-hop with hard-hitting drums, piano and strings playing sweetly together. It all sets the stage for Kelly to weave the tale of a courtship that seems unnecessarily rocky.
“Complicated” seems to tell the story of the film, with Kelly expressing how she feels about not only the course of the relationship but also the pressures mounting in her life. However, she wants love to be her solace in trying times rather than spending time playing the blame game. “Games are freaking lame, and I don’t really want to play them at the mercy of you,” she sings at one point. “If I’m honest I would rather us to focus on what matters ’cause I don’t wanna lose you.”
Method Man pulls up near the song’s end to make his own statement about the state of the relationship. “Life’s complicated but not as hard as we made it / If life’s a B then she’s jaded, that lady nothin’ to play with,” he rhymes. “And she my A-List, the only play in my playlist / To keep it cool and composed like a modern day Amadeus / Love us or hate us, we’re blessed and highly favored.”
“Complicated” is exactly what one would expect from a soundtrack record. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it also obviously sells the movie’s themes quite well.
