Pleasure Is The Principle For Joyce Wrice On ‘Break Me In’

It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since Joyce Wrice dropped her debut album Overgrown and four years since she released her follow-up EP Motive. While the songstress has kept herself in the public eye since then, it seems that she’s finally ready to step back into her own spotlight as she prepares what’s next. She makes the first step with the release of her new single “Break Me In.”

While Joyce has been pretty frank in song before, “Break Me In” finds the singer getting pretty explicit about her wants and desires. The song finds her feeling a bit randy and wanting to be touched in a special way. She sings of how wild she’s been feeling lately and exactly how she wants her lover to tame her (making sure to include how and where he should use his hands). But, she doesn’t want to be kept waiting, if the chorus is any indication.

“I hate it when you make me wait / When I touch myself, it’s not the same / I need you to break me in,” she sings. “Don’t make me wait / Nobody else got me feeling this way.”

While the lyrics have the sound of a bedroom banger, the song’s soundscape is a bit more sugar than spice. That’s because producers Malik Ninety Five and Mike Baretz craft a sound heavily influenced by early Amerie — specifically her debut hit “Why Don’t We Fall In Love.” That means sweet strings and keys paired with harder, hip-hop-influenced drums. It’s a sound that the singer has been flirting with since Overgrown, so “Break Me In” feels like a natural evolution for her.

We’re happy to welcome Joyce Wrice back, and it looks like “Break Me In” is the first listen we’re getting of her upcoming sophomore album. She’s been short with the details on that front, but we imagine that she’ll be more forthcoming as the year wears on. While we wait to hear, check out her new single right here and then peep her performing the track for GeniusOpen Mic series below.
