Rising singer-songwriter Girlfriend has been making a name for herself in R&B over the past few years. The artist born Kenya Edwards, who performed under the stage name Kenyaa early in her career, hails from Mississippi and currently calls Los Angeles home. Girlfriend dropped a self-titled debut album in 2022 and has since scored high-profile collaborations with Chase Shakur and Tierra Whack. She’s been on her grind in 2025, dropping the EP It’s Complicated in April and the single “Sticky Situation” in October. She concludes the year with another new single “Deep” and news that her next collection, Honey Water, is on the way.
“Deep” is sure to resonate with lover girls and guys as it speaks to a scenario we’ve all experienced: the inability to get over a past relationship and reminiscing about what was. Girlfriend co-wrote the song, and her soothing, warm vocals integrate seamlessly with the mid-tempo track that features a subtle drum beat, soothing synth chords and layered background harmonies.
Lyrically, Girlfriend vividly paints the picture of being in limbo and feeling regret in the aftermath of a failed relationship. “Tripping am I still stuck in a phase / And they say if it’s real / Then love won’t change / I think let it go for nothing,” she laments on the pre-chorus.
“Deep” arrived with a visualizer that matches the song’s darker mood. Filmed around Los Angeles at night, the cinematography reflects Girlfriend’s conflicted feelings as she’s bathed in red light throughout. The songstress begins the visual leaning on the hood of her parked beemer while the city lights twinkle in the background and the lyrics appear on the bottom of the screen. The scene shifts back and forth to her riding in the back seat of the car as it navigates the streets.
If you’re going up for what Girlfriend is putting down, there’s much more in store on Honey Water. Both “Deep” and “Sticky Situation” are featured on the 10-track project, which will be released on Encore Recordings on Friday, January 16th.
