Yuna has been fairly consistent in releasing music over the past few years. While it looked like this year might be the exception, the singer-songwriter continues her streak by dropping the new single “if you don’t love me.”
The single further shows Yuna’s mastery of her craft, with her once again acting as a one-woman show by producing, writing and performing the record herself. This time around, she leans toward a more pop-forward and electronic sound by utilizing moody synths and skittering drums to communicate the song’s emotion and themes.
Lyrically and vocally, she evokes an emotion similar to Sade’s brokenhearted love songs. The song focuses on a woman noticing that love has left her relationship. She notices it in the look in her man’s eyes and his wandering mind. But rather than sit idly as love slips away, Yuna opts to be more proactive as she lets her longing to be free of the situation be heard.
“If you don’t love me / It’s only fair you let me go / It’s only fair / That you don’t take me down with you,” she sings on the song’s chorus, somehow communicating a sliver of hope mixed in with the song’s gloomy subject matter.
Yuna has always known how to convey emotions both simple and complicated in her work and “if you don’t love me” finds her doing it to great effect.
