It’s safe to say that there will never be another star like Michael Jackson. The late King of Pop achieved a level of fame that has yet to be rivaled and broke several barriers and records throughout his storied career. That’s the kind of life worthy of a big screen retelling, and he’s getting just that with the upcoming biopic Michael. While we’ve been hearing a lot of news about the upcoming film, we’re now getting our first look at the project with its just-released teaser trailer.
The film’s teaser opens with Michael, played by the singer’s real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson, in the studio with the legendary Quincy Jones (played by Kendrick Sampson) as they begin to craft what will be the blockbuster that is Thriller. The strains of “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” are heard as we are given a tour through Michael’s life.
We see clips of a young MJ with his family, driving fans wild in stadiums, bringing his mesmerizing music videos to life and the pandemonium that surrounded him. Most of the footage suggests that the film will mainly focus on his whirlwind time during the Thriller era, though there are glimpses of moments before and beyond that time.
The sneak preview also provides a glimpse of some familiar faces playing integral roles in Michael’s life, including Academy Award nominee Miles Teller as the singer’s longtime attorney John Branca and Nia Long as Jackson matriarch Katherine Jackson. They won’t be the only starry names on the screen, however. The cast also boasts Larenz Tate, Kat Graham, Laura Harrier and Colman Domingo.
The trailer rightfully has everyone talking about the biopic, especially with its attention to detail and care in capturing one of the biggest stars of our time. We’ll have to wait a short while to see the movie in full, however, as its release isn’t scheduled until Friday, April 24th.
