The streets are currently buzzing about Jhené Aiko and the status of her relationship with longtime beau Big Sean. While neither the singer nor Sean have confirmed if they have indeed called it quits, it seems that the rumor mill has already assumed what went down and has even taken sides. Jhené might be making things known now, however, with the release of her new song “Break.”
As the title suggests, “Break” is about breaking up. More specifically, it touches on the dreaded aftermath of a breakup and the thoughts and questions that linger. Producer LEJKEYS provides the musical backdrop by setting thoughtful, somber piano against surprisingly quick-paced drums. The arrangement sets the tone as Jhené applies her signature dreamy vocal tone for the song’s verses.
Her lyrics here focus on how the breakup has her feeling, with her expressing the grief she feels now that things are over. She sings of seeing him in her dreams only to wake up alone and even questioning whether she hallucinated the entire relationship. In the end, though, all she’s left with is the pain of his absence.
"I can’t escape the heartbreak, break, break / I can’t explain the way I’ve been made to feel,” she sings on the chorus. “It’s an immeasurable pain, pain, pain / And I’m not even sure any of it’s real.”
If “Break” is indeed autobiographical, like so much of the music we get from Jhené Aiko, then it’s safe to say that she’s going through it. If not, then she’s once again penned a song that distinctly touches on the rawness one feels in the aftermath of a love that ends.
