Muni Long might be on the road right now supporting Brandy and Monica on their The Boy Is Mine Tour, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have time to give her fans something new. The celebrated singer-songwriter is back to give us more with the release of her latest ballad “Delulu.”
Long shows us that she can also tackle the power ballad with a level of panache that only she can deliver. She allows producers Ben Parris and Tricky Stewart to give her the wind beneath her wings with a sound bed that sounds like the best adult contemporary staples of the late ’80s and early ’90s — synth keys, a looming bass and bombastic programmed drums that make the song sound equally epic and sentimental.
But a power ballad is only good as its vocalist, and Muni Long makes sure that she makes “Delulu” soar. She starts off the song subtly enough with a smooth delivery that quickly builds to belt by the pre-chorus and goes full tilt by the chorus. But she doesn’t let the riffs and runs get the better of her, instead practicing a control that is quite opposite of what she sings about in the song.
There, Muni is unable to control how fast she’s falling, with her heart taking her to levels of delusion that she can’t come back from. She’s trying to have her potential boo on love lockdown on the first verse. And by the time the second verse rolls around, she’s showing all her toxic traits as she matches what seems to be his energy. But it’s all explained on the chorus.
“I’m delusional, delusional / Thinking I could have it all / Thinking I’d avoid the fall,” she exclaims for the world to hear. “I’m delusional, delusional / Thinking I could have it all / Thinking I’d avoid the fall / I’m delulu, delulu over you.”
Muni Long makes sure that we feel and understand what she’s going through on “Delulu.” And though we might not be the same level of delusional that she’s on, we must admit we’re crazy about this song. Take a listen to when you press play below.
