The way things are going in the world at the moment, it’s more than understandable that many people aren’t in the best headspace these days. But maintaining and making space for your mental health is important. Thankfully, music can be a refuge in times like these and our friends Moonchild have just the balm we need with their new Astyn Turr-featuring track “Ride The Wave.”
“Ride The Wave,” which follows the trio’s recent single “Not Sorry” featuring contributions from Jill Scott and Rapsody, touches on the importance of the old adage that the only way out is through. Perhaps to illustrate this, the band uses a marching drum beat as the foundation supporting their always-dreamy blend of keys, horns and other live instrumentation. The result is a groove that both soothes and motivates.
Meanwhile, the song lyrically speaks to the feelings of sadness and despair that sometimes come when life gets difficult and the ways we try to self-soothe and heal. “I tried to dance through it, find myself a treat / Though, I had some yesterday,” the band’s lead vocalist Amber Navran sings on the opening verse. “They say to move through it / They call it love that’s still searchin’ for a place.”
Astyn Turr also addresses this feeling in her verse. Of course, she mentions the tears and ache that come with dealing, but she also makes a realization, singing, “I’m workin’ on takin’ heartbreak as proof that mine still works just the same.”
The song’s video utilizes the same visual motif, with old-school television sets being utilized to showcase the band in addition to showing them live on the set. The key difference here, though, is the color palette of pastel blues and purples that give the video and song a lighter, airier feel. The other difference is that the featured artist actually appears alongside Moonchild this go ’round, with Astyn jamming alongside the band in a fun furry hat.
“Ride The Wave” is the second release from Moonchild’s as-yet-untitled album set to arrive next year. While the details about that are scarce, the two singles we have so far indicate a level of quality that has us hopeful for its arrival.
