Tori Kelly isn’t just starting her next era; she’s entering a new frontier: Motherhood. The 32-year-old singer-songwriter and her husband André Murillo announced that she’s pregnant with their first child in a video posted to her socials in July. The news was met with glee from her fanbase, but what really piqued everyone’s interest was the mystery music that soundtracked the tender moment. That music turned out to be a sneak preview of Tori’s brand-new single, a duet with Lucky Daye entitled “Make A Baby.”
The mommy-to-be recorded “Make A Baby” on the low months before her big reveal. According to Tori, “I had just found out that I was pregnant and I wasn’t even telling anybody, so I just threw it out casually in the studio, like, ‘Yeah, we’re kinda thinking about starting a family.’ I was thinking maybe we can write some kind of love song about me and my husband or something. Then we got kind of carried away and ended up hitting it right on the nose.”
It’s kismet the way that “Make A Baby” came together. Kelly and Daye co-wrote the track with its producer Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman and Marcus Lomax. With a groove-heavy foundation of bass, rhythm guitar, drums and keys, the duet partners deliver a soulful pop confection that sounds like ear candy with lyrics that stick like soul food.
Tori sings to the man who “feels just like home” to her before she lets him know that it’s time to expand their family. “And there’s no one here but you and me / We been through it, yeah, we been everywhere and in between / Making the complicated easy, felt every kind of feeling / Passed every test, boxes checked, I’m ready for what comes next / Let’s make a baby,” she sweetly sings on the chorus to seal the deal.
Lucky is all in. “Half on a baby, I know it sounds crazy / Let’s make forever tonight / Oh, baby,” he croons on his verse. Their voices blend beautifully on the remainder of the song as they share harmonies, riffs and runs.
