Khalid Gives Us A Sexy ‘out of body’ Experience

It’s truly a new era for Khalid. The singer and Texas native is stepping out hotter as he readies the release of his upcoming album after the sun goes down. He kicked off the promotion for the LP just over a month ago with its lead single “in plain sight.” Now, he’s getting sexy with it on the set’s next single “out of body.”

The track is a sexy cut aimed directly at those who might be feeling a bit of nostalgia for the early 2000s. Produced by Rodney Jerkins (one of the architects of that era’s sound) and Jack Lawson, “out of body” has several of the hallmarks — including instrumentation reminiscent of the Bollywood sampling craze of the era and percussion-forward production. It all comes together for a slinky, sexy groove for which Khalid rises to the occasion.

Khalid is obviously in a certain mood on this one, singing of yearning for a closer connection with someone he’s got his eye on. The verses play it cool at first, though his naughtier thoughts slip through as he sings of his wanting and the “place your lips could go” when the time is right. On the chorus, though, he’s a bit more forward in his words as he suggests getting lifted and getting right down to it. “C’mon now, let’s get it started / You want it and I’m about it,” he sings. “Marijuana, smokin’ exotic / Blowin’ my mind out, so out of body.”

The sexy keeps flowing in the song’s music video, which seems to pay homage to Britney Spears’ classic “I’m A Slave 4 U” clip. Khalid is on full display and owning his sexuality here, allowing himself to flirt and dance very suggestively with his male lead. Though their lips nearly touch in several moments (and even more is implied), the sexual tension is palpable. And when the singer isn’t playing off the sexual energy of his leading man, he’s spreading the love among the rest of the video’s dancers as he joins them in writhing and slinking around the set in precisely choreographed moves.
