Tyla has been on a mission to make people dance since debuting in 2023 with her monster single “Water.” She’s released jam after jam since then, and she continues the trend with her latest drop, the mixtape WWP. The project’s title is an acronym for “We Wanna Party,” and Tyla sets it off on these four songs.

The set opens with “DYNAMITE,” and the title is quite apropos. Tyla collaborates with Nigerian superstar Wizkid to deliver an explosive link-up. The track features a hypnotic Amapiano beat as the foundation for their flirtation. The lyrics tell the story of two people who are instantly attracted to each other and want to act on their impulses. Tyla cuts to the chase on the sexy chorus, singing, “I just wanna back it up on beat / Sing your name in key / I know what I want from you / You know what you want from me.”

Ever since she was introduced to the world stage, Tyla has been the subject of scrutiny and criticism on multiple fronts. She’s aware of what people have been saying and claps back on “MR. MEDIA.” Over a thunderous synth beat, Tyla leaves no crumbs as she scolds the media. “Mister Media, why, why, why? / Why you gotta tell ’em lie, lie, lie?” she sings. She also incorporates a little Sesotho, a Bantu language that is one of the official languages in her native South Africa, as she repeats the phrase, “Bare ke lemeke,” which translates into “they say it’s a joke.”

Tyla keeps the pressure on us to stay on the dance floor with “IS IT.” Over an infectious drumbeat, she lets her dance partner know she is very much interested in continuing things beyond the party. She leaves no doubt when she sings, “Is the song why we get along? / Or am I coming on a little strong? / Is it wrong that I wanna get it right / Wanna get it right with you?”

For the last song on the mixtape, “BLISS,” Tyla lets us know what falling in love feels like from her perspective. Musically, the song is driven by melodic keys before her soothing voice drops in, eventually to be joined by a rhythmic drumbeat. She confesses on the chorus that this is the real thing, singing, “Take me out my mind, oh, oh / You take me to bliss / Never found a love like this.”

With WWP, Tyla brings the heat and gives fans another summer soundtrack. The mixtape is short and sweet just like the season, but we suspect the party that she’s started won’t stop anytime soon.
