It seems NPR Music can’t miss these days as they continue to show and prove that they have their fingers on the pulse of what music lovers want to see on their iconic Tiny Desk Concert series platform. For their latest stroke of genius, they invited British living legend Omar to pull up to their Washington, D.C. headquarters while he was in the DMV on his Brighter The Days U.S. Tour.

Omar has brought his global fanbase nothing but good musical vibes for over 45 years. Often credited as a forefather of neo-soul, the pioneering artist helped build the foundation for the genre. NPR recognized Omar’s contributions during a set that spanned his discography and highlighted new gems and beloved classics.

Backed by his talented six-piece band and stellar supporting vocalist Vivian Sessoms, Omar was properly suited and booted in a black shirt, red tie and black-and-white pinstripe vest and pants. He kicked off his set with the up-tempo song “Can We Go Out?” from his latest album Brighter The Days. Omar was clearly enjoying the moment as he bopped to the music while delivering signature vocals. The band followed his lead as the cameras caught them smiling while they laid down a tight groove.

The in-person audience erupted into applause before Omar transitioned into his next selection, “The Man” from his 2013 album of the same name. He gave everyone a taste of his skills by tickling the keys for a brief moment before blessing us with more vocals.

At this point, Omar took the time to address those in attendance at his Tiny Desk Concert and thanked them for being there and for their support over his career. He then proceeded to play the keys for the intro of his soulful ballad “Little Boy” from the For Pleasure album. Toward the end of the song, he scatted a little, infusing a bit of jazz into the performance.

Omar then brought the vibes on his hypnotizing cut “This Is Not A Love Song.” Though he easily commanded everyone’s attention, Vivian got an opportunity to shine on backgrounds. Omar was really feeling the vibes when he sung out, “We can do this all night!” near the song’s end.

For the final song of his impressive set, Omar went back to the beginning of his career to his first hit “There’s Nothing Like This.” Omar sounded as good as he did when the song and his There’s Nothing Like This album came out in 1990. This live rendition featured a smooth sax solo by Antonio Parker. Since this was the last song, Omar flexed towards the end of this cut with some soulful ad-libs.

The band, led by bassist and music director Mike Griot, did a stellar job backing Omar during the roughly 21-minute performance. Everyone’s efforts were genuinely appreciated by the crowd, who delivered a hearty round of applause as Omar and company finished this memorable edition of Tiny Desk.
