She may be a talented singer-songwriter who always has our ear, but it should also be said that our girl KIRBY is a whole lotta woman. She’s told us as much on boastful and bouncy tracks like “Coconut Oil” and “Kool Aid.” And now that she’s paid tribute to her Southern roots on her recent single “The Man,” she’s back in her bag and she’s bringing rising rapper Akeem Ali along for her single “Thick N Country.”
“Thick N Country” continues the southern-fried sound that KIRBY has been playing with much more in recent years. This time, however, she’s making things funky on a track stacked with horns, fat bass lines, rhythm guitar and layered vocals courtesy of her longtime collaborator and producer Homer Steinwess. The groove is all that KIRBY needs to boast about her state and her assets.
The song opens with her conjuring images of Mississippi, including drives up Interstate 55, cups filled with dark liquor, backyard gatherings and ripped jean shorts. She then caps things off by shouting out her ride of choice on the chorus, singing, “Cadillac / I’m thick and country / Ooh, baby say he like my body like he like my accent / Thick.”
Akeem Ali then pops in for his clever verse, likening the singer’s shape to everything from cold oatmeal to a fine bottle of wine. “’Cause the wagon that you draggin’ got me past the flabbergasted phase / You bad huh? / Do you need an inhaler for all that a**-ma?” he rhymes. “Breathe, Keem, girl you fine as wine your body Riesling.”
The song’s video brings the lyrics to life quite literally, with KIRBY and Akeem acting out or referencing nearly every word that’s spoken with a little love to their Mississippi state of mind thrown in for good measure. But the clip really sings during a brief interlude before the rap, which finds the singer playing waitress to Akeem’s customer. The two get their flirt on with Southern hospitality and charm that makes us wish we were riding with them in that Caddy.
“Thick N Country” is a sticky-sweet track sure to put a little bump in your trunk and funk in your step. Let KIRBY and Akeem Ali show you how it’s done when you listen to the track and watch its video below.
