Kem has enjoyed an over-20-year career with Motown Records, but that season has ended. He’s decided to leave the storied label and return to his indie soul roots by relaunching his label Kemistry Records. His first release on the imprint is the single “Give My Love,” which even has its own line dance as seen in its newly-released visual.
“Give My Love” rides the Amapiano-meets-R&B wave that’s risen the charts in recent years. Kem enlisted Rex Rideout to co-produce the song, which they co-wrote with Ronnie Garrett. The team crafted a track that sounds like a summer vacation. The infectious beat will make you want to run to the dance floor, while the lyrics will have you running into the arms of the one you love.
The crooner is at his smoothest when he sings to his lady. “I wanna give my love to you / When the world around is on fire / I wanna give my love to you / When the spirit’s taking us higher,” Kem serenades her on the chorus.
A music video for the breezy single has been released, but instead of taking us on a tropical escape with his woman to some faraway locale, Kem takes viewers to New Jersey. That’s where we see him pulling up to Atrium Dance Studio and dapping up the choreographer Kenny J. who teaches him the steps to the “Give My Love” line dance in a room full of steppers. After a little practice, Ken eventually gets the footwork down. We’re then transported to Detroit where he debuted the song and hustle live on stage during a performance at the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre in July with Kenny and his crew of steppers. With everyone dressed in all white, including Kem who donned a sharp suit, they had a white party right there onstage.
Kem is excited about his next chapter. “After being signed to Motown Records, the label I’ve loved and called ‘home’ for more than two decades, I have now returned to my Kemistry Records label - where my musical journey and my first album, KEMISTRY, were born,” he shared in a press statement on his website.
With “Give My Love” as his first single post-Motown, Kem has stepped into this new era like a boss. Listen to the song and watch the visual below, and stay tuned for much more to come from Kem.
