India Shawn has had a change of heart. After pulling the plug on getting entangled with a friend on her single “Kill Switch,” she warms up to the idea of journeying from friends to lovers on her latest release, the duet “Cotton Candy Blvd.” Who better for India to make that move and make music with than Lucky Daye?
Both singer-songwriters have super-producer D’Mile in common, and he’s behind the boards with Chiiild on production for “Cotton Candy Blvd.” Atop the track’s luscious instrumentation of bass and a steady drumbeat, Shawn and Daye take listeners on a sweet ride as they express their feelings.
India is in the driver’s seat and trying to navigate her way into Lucky’s heart. “Let’s complicate it without a reason / Let’s be more than friends / Tip over the edge ’til we get intoxicated,” she sings with her foot on the gas in the opening verse. He matches her energy and interest and is ready to go the distance on his verse as he sings, “Not for nothing this feeling’s too strong / And we can’t slow the pace / I’m tempted for just one taste, forbidden fruit.”
India knows exactly where she wants this thing between them to go on the chorus. “Take me up on Sweet Lane / Down a Sticky Avenue / All the things that we can do / Won’t be long until we get to / Cotton Candy Boulevard / Touch me, baby, push to start / Yeah (yeah), drive until we go too far,” she sings solo for the first instance of the chorus before Lucky joins her when it reappears later in the song.
India Shawn and Lucky Daye are as smitten with each other on “Cotton Candy Blvd” as we are with this song. She calls this a “dream collab,” and their voices blend beautifully to create quite a duet for the culture.
“‘Cotton Candy Blvd’ is a summer night, a slow drive, and a long-awaited yes,” India described the single in a press statement. “The song is sweet, but it’s got depth – it’s the tension before the kiss, the invitation and the promise. When I sing ‘I’m more than ready to love,’ I mean it.”
