A new Doja Cat era is loading. The at times controversial pop/rap star has been teasing her upcoming album Vie for quite sometime, but she went into overdrive this week by release the album’s cover and two teasers via Instagram. She also teased the set’s lead single “Jealous Type,” finally delivering on her promise to drop it today (August 21st).
Doja takes us deep into the 1980s with a soundscape that feels ripped straight out of 1987. That trick is courtesy of the song’s producers, Jack Antonoff and Y2K, who steep the track in so much of the decade’s musical aesthetic of bright synths and programmed drums that it should come with complimentary shoulder pads, sequins and bright red lipstick. And Doja is more than game to play along with the fantasy.
The track finds her warning a man of her potential to let the green-eyed monster take over on occasion. As the synths blare, she sets everything straight by the first chorus, singing, “Boy, let me know if this is careless, I / Could be torn between two roads that I just can’t decide / Which one is leading me to hell or paradise? / Baby, I can’t hurt you, sure, but I’m the jealous type / I’m the jealous type.”
In the song’s video, the star plays ’80s femme fatale in a series of outfits that range from barely there to glamorous as she flits and flirts across our screens. We eventually see that her prey is actually herself, with Doja eventually ensnaring herself on the hood of a limo and doing some seductive writhing around on the hood of a car.
“Jealous Type” gives us the quite the first impression of what to expect from Vie. We can only imagine what kind of ride Doja Cat has in store for us when the album arrives on Friday, September 26th. While we contemplate that, stream the song and watch its video right here. Then hop below to see the album’s rose-covered cover art.
