With the sheer amount of features that she’s done in recent years, one wouldn’t think that Syd hasn’t dropped new solo material since the release of her 2022 album Broken Hearts Club. Yet, it is actual and factual. It seems that she’s revving up her output this year, however. She was recently spotted in the studio with her The Internet brethren. And now, she’s dropped her first single in three years with the track “Die For This.”
“Die For This” captures the lazy, hazy feeling of summer love thanks to its combination of Syd’s R&B sensibilities and a pinch of bossa nova groove. This means that the song has a push-and-pull type of rhythm, with things going nice and easy before picking up the pace and then flowing back into the initial cadence.
The rhythm also adds to the song’s narrative. It finds Syd professing her love as she commits to a love worth dying for. The song’s only verse has her gushing about her as she proclaims that she’s happy to shout her feelings to the world. But it’s the chorus that succinctly gets to the heart of the matter, as she lets it be known that she’s ride or die when it comes to her boo.
“I just hate to think of where we might’ve been / If I pulled the rug instead of diving in / Never hit the brakes, let’s keep the ride goin’,” she sings. “Really love my life, but I would die for this / I would die for this.”
“Die For This” comes as Syd prepares to embark on tours with pop stars Billie Eilish and Renee Rapp this summer and fall as a supporting act. For Billie, Syd will be riding with her on the European leg of her Hit Me Hard And Soft Tour through the end of July.
