Jenevieve is making good on her mission to bring her chilled-out R&B vibes to a speaker near you this summer. When we last checked in with the singer-songwriter, she had just given us her most recent jam “Head Over Heels.” She’s not waiting on us to stop nodding our heads to that one, however. Instead, she’s announced that her latest album CRYSALIS is headed our way much sooner than we thought. And, to make sure that we’re ready, she’s also dropped off the set’s short and sweet title track.
Like the rest of the album, “Crysalis” is produced by Elijah Gabor. The song picks up the BPM compared to “Head Over Heels” while also introducing a jazzy flair to the proceedings. The song begins with Jenevieve harmonizing with sampled, distorted vocals, but crashing cymbals soon usher in the other instruments — including a sturdy bass line and sampled horns that ride along the rhythm supplied by the drums.
Jenevieve, meanwhile, keeps things poetic as she sweetly expresses frustrations about the volatility of love. “All that I try / Give up love / Try to do all that I can,” she sings on the chorus. “Know that you cannot be right / Never enough for your love / No, we don’t know where we go from here.”
The song also serves as the soundtrack for the album’s trailer. The 48-second video briefly takes us into the singer’s space as the camera pans across her, eclectic furniture and vinyl records before revealing Elijah Gabor and his guitar sitting in a recliner. It eventually leads into the recreation of the album’s cover before revealing the project’s release date of Friday, August 8th.
With just over a week before the set’s release, we suggest that you get your ears ready for newness from one of the smoothest in alt-R&B to do it.
