The ladies of FLO have had quite the eventful year thus far. After dropping their much-lauded debut Access All Areas last year, the trio has been everywhere promoting the set and taking audiences by storm with on their Access All Areas Tour. With all that going on, one would think that they wouldn’t have time for anything else, but somehow the ladies found the time to link up with in-demand super-producer Kaytranada for new joint “The Mood.”
With FLO making such a big wave in the R&B world, it was inevitable that the ladies would link up with Kaytranada. And “The Mood” is the perfect melding of the two worlds. Kaytra keeps the song’s production well within the wheelhouse of cuts he has laced other R&B luminaries with. His signature elastic electro-bass line is on full display as are his usual icy cold synths and shuffling drums.
The ladies slide right into the groove quite seamlessly, though they lead us into an unexpected direction. Instead of steering directly into the song’s sexy sound, they instead make “The Mood” all about them not wanting to get between the sheets at the moment. They spend the verses of the song letting us know that, on any other night, they’d be all about getting it on. However, by the chorus, they spell out that it just ain’t gonna happen.
“It’s not that I don’t wanna chill tonight / It’s not that I don’t wanna feel tonight,” they sing. “It’s just that I ain’t in a freaky vibe / It’s just that I ain’t in the mood tonight.”
Also released alongside the track is an animated music video featuring artwork by Destinée Salvador. The group and Kaytranada are depicted like you’ve never seen them before. The visualizer shows the producer picking up the ladies in a slick red car as they take the town by storm. The super creative loop isn’t what we expected for a cut like “The Mood,” but it fits the song quite perfectly.
