Mariah Carey is feeling herself these days. The lauded singer-songwriter is coming off a celebration of her classic album The Emancipation Of Mimi and signing a new deal with media company gamma.. With a big year ahead of her, the singer is readying her 16th studio album and ushering it in with her latest single “Type Dangerous.”

While mixing pop, R&B and hip-hop is old hat for Mariah, “Type Dangerous” feels a bit different for the diva. Perhaps it’s because she has the pen game of rumored beau Anderson .Paak and Rae Khalil in the mix. Or maybe it’s because she co-produced the song alongside Tobe Nwigwe and Daniel Moore II. Either way, the veteran songstress has a cocky swagger on the track underscored by a prominent sample of Eric B. & Rakim’s “Eric B. Is President.”

That swagger has Mariah on the prowl for a man with a bit of danger in his air. She approaches this by stunting and flexing like the MCs whose lines she quotes directly in her lyrics on the first verse, letting everyone know that she’s got it like that. By verse two, she’s running down a list of the men she’s been linked with in the public eye while cementing that now her life is “sex in the city with a couple of flings.” She keeps her message short and sweet on the chorus, though, singing sweetly, “Lookin’ for the dangerous type / I like ’em dangerous.”

“Type Dangerous” isn’t necessarily up to the level of the singer’s best material (especially with it arriving so close to Emancipation’s 20th anniversary), but it’s an interesting direction for Mariah Carey, nonetheless. Give the cut a spin and watch its lyric video when you scroll below.
