Chxrry — the artist formerly known as Chxrry22 — hasn’t just altered her name, she’s switched her whole musical style up. After dropping the vibey EPs The Other Side in 2022 and Siren in 2023, Chxrry’s most recent singles, “Poppin Out (Mistakes)” and “Just Like Me,” skew toward upbeat contemporary R&B with pop appeal. She continues to have fun in the studio and creates another baddie anthem with her new song “Main Character.”
The singer-songwriter taps into a trap R&B sound for “Main Character.” She enlists producer Believve to give her the sub-genre’s signature cadence with speaker-rattling drums, brooding synths and handclaps. The track is ready for the club, and so is Chxrry.
She hits the door proclaiming, “I wanna see the baddest b*****s / Who gon’ stand out?” on the hook, which begins the song and invites all the babes to the front. Chxrry repeats her request before declaring that she’s the star of the story when she raps, “I’m the main character / B***h, f**k a background.”
She talks her stuff throughout the song, exuding confidence and a little cockiness on lyrics like, “F**k ’round tell Mona Lisa, ‘Move’ / I’ll put myself up in the Louvre.” Chxrry makes it clear that she’s the baddest. Period.
With the release of “Main Character,” Chxrry is three-for-three with her latest singles. The XO Records signee hasn’t indicated if a new album is on the way, but she’s certainly got something sweet cooking. Now that her stint on FLO’s Access All Areas North American Tour has come to an end, it’s her time to command the spotlight like a main character should.
