Life has been life-ing for us all lately. Included in that number is Atlanta-based singer-songwriter PJ, who had been on a hiatus after last gifting us with music back in 2023. She’s had a bit of upheaval in her life on both the personal and professional fronts, but still managed to come back stronger from it. In fact, she’s managed to put that pain into her art to create her newest single “Day One.”

PJ has mentioned several times on her social media that “Day One” marks a new beginning for her, and the song’s content tells the story. She opts for darker production here that consists of a slightly ominous looped sample and hard-hitting drums. The switch-up might be jarring for those so used to a warmer sound from the singer, but it fits the mood she’s bringing as she shows love to her day one friends while calling out the way some others are moving.

Though the song points out a lot of the negative, she still manages to bring the love in the chorus with a sing-song call and response. “If you out there, shorty / Bump this for me / One time for me / You say, ‘yeah, that’s right,’” she chants. “If you out there grindin’ / Overtimin’ / Day and nightin’ / You say, ‘yeah, that’s right’ / If your day one n***as still there witcha / One time for me / You say, ‘yeah, that’s right.’”

For the song’s video, PJ and director Benji Flores keep it pretty simple. The black-and-white clip features PJ hanging her head out of the car window while performing the song. It’s not only a classic and cool visual, but it also adds to the singer’s current story of moving into a new era as we literally watch her leave everything behind and move forward into her destiny.
