Keke Palmer is known to mind the business that pays her, but in the past couple of years, her business has been in the street. That’s thanks to a very public breakup with her son’s father, Darius Jackson, who got Twitter fingers after footage of Usher serenading her during his infamous Las Vegas residency went viral. It turns out there was more to the story. After joining Ursher in the video for his song “Boyfriend” and making fun of the situation, Keke finally tells all in “My Confession,” the second single from her forthcoming new album Just Keke.
As the song title suggests, Keke channels her inner Usher on “My Confession,” which samples his 2004 smash “Confessions Part II.” Although Usher’s original wasn’t his truth, Palmer’s flip is autobiographical as she rewinds to that tumultuous period to clear some things up.
“Summer ’23 we was in Vegas, right / Broke up with me, and you hopped up on a flight / Was tryna find my way back to alright / So I figured I’d have myself a girl’s night,” Keke sings on the first verse, sharing the backstory that we never knew. After having a time at the Usher show with her crew, she was all over the timeline, and Jackson got in his feelings.
“48 hours later online / Made me a villain for sympathy but you lied / But the truth is in Vegas we was already over, boo / Because of you,” Keke continues reading her ex. By the hook, she’s over it and way past over him, singing, “F**k yo’ projections / These are my confessions.”
“This one is personal. ‘My Confession’ is exactly what it sounds like — me giving voice to the feelings I buried,” Keke shared on Instagram about the soul-baring track written alongside her bestie Tayla Parx and Kameron Glasper. “Sometimes the closure we need doesn’t come from a conversation — it comes from being honest with ourselves. That’s what this song is. My peace. My clarity. My way of letting go,” Palmer wrote. “This track is raw, it’s emotional, and it’s real. I’m not here to play perfect. I’m here to be honest. I’m just here to be Keke.”
Keke Palmer will share more of her truth and herself on Just Keke. The set features 18 tracks, including the slinky lead single “125 Degrees.” The project will be her second major release of the year, following the EP DivaGurl: A Story By Keke Palmer from her DivaGurl side project. Just Keke will be released on Friday, June 20th and is available now for pre-save on music streaming services.
