Mahalia is ready to give us what we need as she prepares her upcoming set Luvergirl, Vol. 1. The singer has already released two singles from the teased project — “Pick Up The Pace” and the Lila Iké-featuring “Pressure Points.” Both joints found the British songstress embracing her Jamaican heritage as she grooved to reggae- and lovers rock-influenced production. Now she’s setting her sights on dancehall as she teams with Masicka on her newest single “Different Type Of Love.”
Produced by F.S. Green, J.L.L. and Dave Nunes, the song is a potent mix of Mahalia’s brand of R&B, pop and dancehall that aims to seduce us with arpeggiated electronic strings, a constant kick and clacking drums that make you want to wine. Mahalia keeps things going with a hypnotic vocal as she speaks about getting caught up in a one-night love affair.
She sings about a bad boy that she’s keeping a freaky secret. Though he might be her undercover lover, things might be going public if she doesn’t keep her head about her. “It should be illegal, illegal / The way you keep on talking to me so,” she sings on the catchy chorus. “Too many shots of the Casamigos / Got me talking illegal / Boy, I know your body is lethal.”
Masicka doesn’t make it easy on Mahalia as he offers a verse full of come-ons in a thick patois. “The wind illegal (Woah) / Nobody is so lethal (Woah) / No say you badder, I’m a seat for you (Seat),” he rhymes in a sing-song cadence. “My gyal cyaan take the lead from you (One time) / The way you make me feel (Woah).”
“I’ve been waiting for ‘Different Type Of Love’ to come out since it was made,” Mahalia said about her latest record. “It’s fun, sexy and the perfect ‘luvergirl’ record. I’ve been a FAN of Masicka for a long time and [I]’m so so excited that he’s on this!!”
We think we’re just as excited as Mahalia about this one. It’s the perfect cut to take us into spring and it has us hoping that Luvergirl, Vol. 1 is coming sooner rather than later.
