It was quite nice to hear from singer-songwriter Madison McFerrin when she returned on the scene after a brief hiatus with her seductive single “Ain’t It Nice.” There is apparently plenty more where that came from, however, as she’s just announced the upcoming arrival of her sophomore album SCORPIO. She hasn’t revealed much more about the set outside of its title, but she has teased what’s in store with her latest single “I Don’t.”
“I Don’t” is a bit autobiographical for Madison as it was inspired by her breaking things off with her fiancé ahead of their nuptials during the pandemic. The song — produced by Madison, Zach Brown and WILLOW — plays with elements of blues and rock thanks to its piano melody and buzzy electric guitar riffs that feature throughout. And though it might have been birthed from her relationship’s demise, you won’t find her crying about a no-good man here. Instead, she contemplates the decision she’s made and what it could mean.
“We were supposed to get married today / ’Stead I’m here all alone in our home with no one to call my own,” she sings on the opening verse. “Got me wondering did I make a mistake / In choosing who to say ‘I do’ to / ’Cause I guess I don’t.”
The song’s video plays up on the theme of broken matrimony. It’s shot in black-and-white with plenty of shadow as we watch Madison play the role of a lonely bride. She walks through the spaces of what could be a church while looking ever-so gorgeous as she sings. But as soon as the electric guitars reach their peak, her surroundings are set aflame and the building she’s in begins to crumble around her.
“‘I Don’t’ brought me to the other side of heartbreak, I was honored that WILLOW loved the song enough to co-produce it with me,” the singer said of the song in a press release. “SCORPIO is for everyone who has ever felt lost, fought like hell to find themselves, and for those who are still summoning the strength to do so.”
Madison McFerrin has shown us two very different sides of what her SCORPIO could be, and we’re ready to see and hear more. We’ll get to do just that soon, as the album is set to arrive on Tuesday, June 24th.
