Known for his slow jams and midtempo cuts, Kevin Ross picks up the pace on his new EP Love Uptempo, Vol. 1. On the five-track project, he invites his listeners and lovers to the dance floor to work up a sweat while they shake it down to the ground.
After exploring more toxic topics on his previous EP series Midnight Microdose, Vol. 1 and Midnight Microdose, Vol. 2, Kevin is caught up in the rhythm of love here. Throughout Love Uptempo, Vol. 1, Ross explores the radiant spectrum of relationships on this collection of feel-good songs and infectious grooves.
He pops out and sets the tone with the EP’s title bop. Co-produced by Ross and Yaahn Hunter Jr., “Love Uptempo (Intro)” is a short-but-sweet treat that gives Michael Jackson vibes as Kevin likens love to an uptempo song. The second single “Back 4 More,” another co-production between Ross and Hunter, comes next and finds our leading man stuck on an irreplaceable woman who still gives him all the feels.
Kev keeps that circling the block energy on the song “Spin.” He gets a production assist from Kheilstone and dips into the waters of Afrobeats on the sexy, upbeat number. That track segues smoothly into “Afrolude,” a mostly instrumental interlude also co-produced with Hunter and seasoned with a sprinkling of Kevin’s vocals and harmonies.
The set concludes with the catchy lead single “Love In The Middle.” A collaboration between Ross and co-writers/co-producers Chuck Harmony and Claude Kelly of the duo Louis York, the trio is a winning combination as Kevin showers his queen with love. It’s no surprise that this track has become a hit with fans and taken off at radio.
Though these songs may be love-focused, according to Kevin, there’s more to them. “This project is much deeper than love…it’s based on time. Time is the most valuable currency we have in this human experience,” he said in a press statement. “Time we can kill, times we regret, time well spent, and most times, we are bound to forget. Time is tempo. The question is… at what pace are you living your life?”
Coming in at only 12 minutes, Kevin Ross doesn’t waste time nor shortchange the listener on Love Uptempo, Vol. 1. He delivers a tight set of songs that are the perfect soundtrack to these transitional days of spring and sweaty summer nights on the horizon. Kevin loves an EP series, so we’re already anticipating the heat that he’s going to bring on Love Uptempo, Vol. 2.
