Kali Uchis was flying high in 2024 with the release of ORQUÍDEAS, her highest charting album on the Billboard 200 to date. So how will she follow up that kind of success? The singer-songwriter is wasting no time as prepares her upcoming fifth studio album Sincerely, this May. But first, she blesses us with the set’s lead single and visual “Sunshine & Rain.”
Kali is no stranger to experimenting with genre and she does just that on “Sunshine & Rain.” This time she plays with a more mellow, almost indie rock kind of sound. The rolling drums and organ put us in the mindset of the ’90s alternative scene, but the lyrics are all Kali Uchis as she focuses on matters of the heart.
The verses find her talking about her vulnerabilities and insecurities when it comes to matters of the heart. However, despite her fears, she’s willing to stick beside her man through thick and thin.
“Through sunshine and rain, as seasons change / We all need somebody that makes the Earth feel heavenly,” she sings with sincerity on the chorus. “Maybe I’ll be that somebody ’cause you’re that someone to me.”
The song’s video has a bit more fun than you’d expect for a song with such an earnest sentiment. It opens with a cartoon cat bidding us good morning before we’re treated to a bubble bath with Kali herself. The songstress is relaxing while watching her favorite news program on KUTV. Each role on the screen — from the anchorwoman to the weather girl — is played by Kali herself in a series of ridiculous situations. Despite the utter chaos of the different scenarios onscreen, Kali still looks comely across her many roles as she keeps the viewer interested.
