We’ve gotten to know the musical stylings of Anthony David over the course of his 20-plus years in the music business. But the musician that we first came to know on his debut Three Chords & The Truth has been evolving his sound over the years. He most recently tapped into the Afrobeats and amapiano sounds with songs like “Russell Wilson” and the remix to his “Heaven” duet with Algebra Blessett. Now he mixes a bit of reggae into his formula on his latest single “For The Longest Time.”
The song isn’t Anthony’s first foray into reggae, as we got a taste of him flirting with the genre on his Julie Dexter duet “50/50 Love.” This go ’round, however, he’s going a bit harder as he embraces many of the genre’s hallmarks. Horns, organ, guitar and a lilting drum beat set the pace for the romantic number as the raspy-voiced crooner makes his love clear for the object of his affections.
On the verses, he talks to a woman who’s used to navigating the world on her own, and possibly closing herself off to love in the process. Rather than spit game at her, Anthony meets her where she’s at, explaining why he’s a good fit to be the man in her life.
“’Cause every day is a day you can always try again / Where there’s a will there’s a way to let somebody in,” he sings. “’Cause I got the same kind of logical mind / And I’m the same kind of fool / So here we go again.”
He keeps the chorus pretty simple, offering her reassurance as he sings, “No, you’re not alone this time / You’ve been on my mind / For the longest time.”
Anthony David has always shown a sincerity in both his lyrics and the soul that he puts into his music. “For The Longest Time” is no exception, and we’re quite thankful for it. Pull the person you love close and be ready to cut a step or two when you press play.
