Zyah Belle isn’t one to be shy. She says what she means and means what she says in her songs, such as her recent singles “LYIN” and “1-800-Heartbreak.” As Zyah continues the rollout of her forthcoming EP, she shoots her shot with plans to score on the new single “About Time.”
Belle enlists Madness on production and rapper Ben Reilly for a feature. Madness laces the track with wavy synths, driving percussion and a sick groove that gives us Kaytranada feels. While the music makes us want to bust a move on the dance floor, Zyah makes her move and approaches a cutie she’s had her eye on for a while.
After stating her case about why they need to leave the function together during the first verse, she cuts to the chase on the chorus. “I ain’t gonna waste no time / Baby, if you’re ready let’s slide / We can leave the party right now / Know I’m down,” she sweetly suggests. She then concludes, “It’s about damn time we get together, together,” before her Third & Hayden labelmate Reilly dips in with his verse.
“‘About Time’ is the soundtrack to the moment you finally make your move,” Zyah explained via press release. “Picture this: you’re at a party, and there’s that person you always seem to run into. The tension is electric, the vibes are undeniable, but nothing’s ever happened… until now. Fueled by a little liquid courage and a lot of anticipation, this song is about breaking the ice and taking that chance. It’s flirty, fun, and full of that ‘butterflies in your stomach’ energy.”
The “About Time” visual brings that energy to the screen. The clock-filled clip is co-directed by Jacob Rink, who is fresh from directing “1-800-Heartbreak,” and Ben Reilly, who pulls triple duty on the mic, behind the camera and in front of it. The camera follows Zyah from her living room, where the part-time DJ places the “About Time” vinyl onto her turntable, to a party that she’s rocking. Fellow R&B artist Lekan makes a cameo as her love interest, and the sparks fly between them as they link up and roll out.
