We’ve been heavily anticipating For You, the debut solo set from Little Dragon frontwoman Yukimi. And now, it has finally arrived. The set — preceded in release by singles “Break Me Down,” “Sad Makeup,” “Winter Is Not Dead,” “Stream Of Consciousness” and “Peace Reign” — is a journey into the singer-songwriter’s psyche as she explores themes of transformation, self-discovery and personal reflection. And now that it is upon us, she’s also dropped the album’s third visual with a music video for “Make Me Whole.”
“Make Me Whole” is another exercise in Yukimi’s ability to create beautifully cryptic musings that are up to interpretation. The song floats on beautifully arranged keys and slow, deliberate drums that allow Yukimi to delve deep into her emotions and question exactly what’s missing. “Something to make me whole / Something you think I need,” she sings on the chorus. “These urges I can’t control /
My emptiness to feed.”
The concept for the song’s visual is a simple one. Yukimi faces the camera in a tight shot while bathed in amber light. She then slowly reaches her hands to her face. Only, the viewer soon realizes that the hands are moving a bit unnaturally to be her own. And when more hands enter the picture, it’s soon apparent that you are watching a truly artistic statement on Yukimi’s part that’s equal parts beautiful, haunting and odd enough to hold your attention.
The same could probably be said of For You as a whole. The album contains 13 songs that step away from the more electronic sound we’ve come to expect from Little Dragon. Instead, she incorporates elements of R&B, jazz, folk and even a little bit of rock to help her express her own dreams, hopes, fears, doubts, strengths and insecurities. It’s an engaging listen that we have a feeling we’ll be unpacking for quite some time.
