Will 2025 be the year of Leven Kali? Well, it definitely looks like the Dutch-American singer-songwriter is sowing the seeds for it to be. He seems to be in the midst of a rollout of sorts, though he has yet to confirm if a larger project is coming. What is coming, though, is amazing music. Last month he dropped the genre-defying “Are U Still,” and now he’s continuing the push with his new joint “Pieces.”
“Pieces” is an irresistibly smooth cut that hooks you from the very beginning. Leven and producing partner Sol Was hang the song on a silky guitar groove that stays sweet and steady throughout the majority of the track. It’s accented by a horn arrangement courtesy of Keyon Harrold, heavenly backing vocals and a little electric guitar buzz to keep the song’s edges just rough enough.
The lyrics follow a loose structure, with no clear chorus. However, the sensual sentiment is clear throughout. “Baby, don’t play with my emotions like I / Have another heart / Baby, don’t give a piece of heaven to me / Then kick me out the sky / Did it ever cross your mind,” he sings before switching to sultrier matters. “You wanna make love? / You wanna get high?”
