Ledisi is on to the next – her next album, that is. After dropping her last project Good Life a little over a year ago, the singer, songwriter and actress announced last month that her 12th album The Crown is on the way. She appeared as a guest on Sherri Shepherd’s eponymous daytime talk show today (Monday, March 17th) to chat about everything she’s been up to (hint: a lot!) and to spill the tea about the forthcoming release.
Shepherd welcomed Ledi to the Sherri set and started her interview with early birthday wishes for the artist who will celebrate turning 53 years young on March 28th. “It is really your time, Ledisi,” Sherri gushed before asking her about her experience singing “Lift Every Voice And Sing” at Super Bowl LIX and the unwarranted hate she received from a certain racist segment of NFL fans.
“I understood the assignment,” Ledisi unapologetically answered while also admitting she felt a little emotional discussing the backlash. She continued, “It’s bigger than me. It’s about honoring the legacy of the song and our ancestors.” Ledisi made it clear that she put her all into her Super Bowl LIX performance for Black people with an emphasis on Black women.
That segued into Ledisi talking about her powerful anthem “BLKWMN” and how Tyler Perry got involved with creating its now-viral music video. She also gave some insight into the lead single “Love You Too” and brought up her Love You Too: The Tour with Marsha Ambrosius, which starts in May.
With her birthday just days away, Ledisi ended her segment with a surprise for her fans and an exclusive for Sherri viewers. She gave Shepherd the scoop that The Crown will be released on Friday, April 25th and the first look of the regal album cover featuring a photograph taken by her husband Ron T. Young.
