Lady Wray hasn’t blessed us with new music in over three years, when the soulful songstress brought her beautiful album Piece Of Me. But the lady hasn’t been in waiting since then. Instead, she took to stages, the studio and even NPR Music’s Tiny Desk to show off her soul-searing vocals for all to hear. After a brief hiatus, the songstress returns with her latest single “Best For Us.”
The song is a magical collaboration between Lady Wray and El Michels Affair, who produced the track. The music is laced with the throwback soul that has served Lady Wray well in this chapter of her career. Its sound – heavy on warm, dreamy guitar and twinkling keys – wraps her vocals in a blanket of melody as she pours out her heart to her man in the lyrics.
“Best For Us” focuses on keeping love strong through all the hurt, pain and sacrifice that any couple might face. “You know you are the love of my life, so don’t make it hard for me / And I try my best to go to church and pray on bended knee,” she sings. “The ups, the downs, the trust / Lord, don’t let it get the best of us / Oh baby, I just want the best for us.”
While the throwback sound can often sound gimmicky, especially after the big boom that occurred over a decade ago, Lady Wray still manages to make the sound feel fresh with every single. Perhaps it’s because she always infuses her songs with palpable emotion that stays far beyond the last note she sings.
