Doechii is currently basking in the glow of being the industry “It” girl after securing her first GRAMMY last month. The “DENIAL IS A RIVER” rapper/singer seems to be everywhere thanks to appearances on stages and runways across the globe. However, it appears that social media has also developed an interest in her old work, namely her previously unreleased track “Anxiety.” After the song made her go viral on TikTok once again, the Swamp Princess answers the people’s calls by officially releasing the song to streaming providers.
The track, which builds upon a sample of Gotye and Kimbra’s award-winning cut "Somebody That I Used To Know," has a long history. It originated when Doechii uploaded the cut to YouTube and garnered a great deal of traction. So much so that rapper Sleepy Hallow eventually sampled the video for his own song, also named “ANXIETY.”
“I took that beat, ‘Somebody That I Used To Know,’ and I made my own song on top of it called ‘Anxiety.’ I dropped that song on YouTube,” Doechii explained about the song’s lore on Instagram Live. “It never hit streaming, and then Sleepy Hallow sampled that, it got approved, and then that song blew up, and now people are finding the original version that I did on YouTube and that’s blowing up on TikTok.”
After taking a listen to the song, which speaks to a certain paranoia that seems to be in the air these days. The song’s refrain especially sticks with you. “Anxiety / Keep on tryin’ me / I feel it quietly / Tryin’ to silence me, yeah,” she sings. “Anxiety / Can’t shake it off of me / Somebody’s watchin’ me / It’s my anxiety, yeah.”
It’s not just her melodic vocals on display, though, as Doechii also lets off a couple dope verses as well. The introspective cut further proves why the artist is in a class all her own.
