We’ve got a birthday girl in the house! Ari Lennox turns a year younger and, like most of our favorite artists, she’s giving us the gift. The singer, who last blessed us with new music when she released “Smoke” last October, gives us some new-new with her latest single “Soft Girl Era.”

Ari is in her bag once again on the track as she teams once more with Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox, who previously created magic with the singer on her hit “Pressure.” They dip into a similar well this go ’round as they sample The New Birth’s “You Are What I'm All About” — which some might recognize as the sample behind Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s “Player’s Anthem.”

The bass-forward cut serves as the perfect backdrop for Ari to slink around against as she makes the case for why she deserves more than the hard knock life and to become a kept woman. She tempts and teases throughout the song’s three-minute runtime, but by the chorus, she makes it plain.

“Baby, that’s a million dollars in the mirror / Step back, get back, can’t get near her / Ain’t tryna do nothing but look pretty in here / Hurry up and put me in my soft girl era,” she sings sassily. “In first class, I ain’t goin’ nowhere / Nails, hair, rent paid, take me somewhere / Ain’t tryna do nothing but look pretty in here / Hurry up and put me in my soft girl era.”
