Amerie is back! The multi-faceted artist stunned her followers on Instagram late last year when she started regularly popping up on IG Live in the studio with producer Troy Taylor. While sharing their recording sessions and giving people a peek into the production process, she previewed a slew of new songs from an album that she assured fans was in the works. After months of teasing and anticipation riding high, Amerie is now ready to roll out all this new music she’s been creating, and she gives us a first listen of the single “Mine.”

“Mine” is actually one of the songs that she shared a snippet of from her IG Live sessions with Taylor. Now that we hear the full version, it sounds even dreamier than we imagined.

Amerie’s vocal floats atop twinkling keys, rhythmic percussion and a warm bassline that feels like a sensual hug when it drops in after the first verse. The instrumentation sets the tone for Amerie to make her move on a close friend. She’s trying to get outta the friend zone and into the love zone.

The song begins with Amerie and her friend having a romantic encounter that she doesn’t want to end. “The way your lips feelin’ tonight / The way they pressed against mine / The way you pull me closer, closer / Under the moonlight / This is how it could always be / You and me / More than friends, we could be / Everything,” she sings, hopeful that their spark will start a fire. Amerie’s determination comes through on the chorus, “There’s something ’bout you, babe / I’ll make you mine / I’ll make you mine (I’ll find a way).”

“Mine” is way more chill and laid-back than her previous lead singles “Why Don’t We Fall In Love” (from 2002’s All I Have) and “1 Thing” (from 2005’s Touch). Although it lacks the excitement of those songs, it is a solid comeback track and a fine addition to Amerie’s oeuvre.

As for that new album Amerie promised, she is indeed putting the finishing touches on her next LP, which will be released later this year. While you wait, listen to “Mine” right here, add the song to your playlists on music streaming services and be sure to check out Amerie’s debut novel This Is Not A Ghost Story, which is due to arrive on June 10th.
