It's quite obvious that iyla is cooking up something, though she’s not ready to announce exactly what that is just yet. What she is ready to do, however, is pepper us with new music. The singer-songwriter eased her way back on the scene with the release of emotional tribute to her late mother “Blue Eyes” and then got sassy again on the disco-influenced “Strut.” Now she’s diving headfirst into a pool of lust with her sexy new single “Overboard.”
The musical waters of “Overboard” are the perfect temperature for a romantic encounter thanks to production provided by iyla’s longtime collaborator Kadis. He begins the track with the sounds of waves washing against the shore before imitating the sounds with wavy bass and slightly fluttering synth keys that underscore the singer’s opening verse.
“Try to be modest / To be honest f**k that modesty,” she coos seductively while getting to the point. “Really I just want you here top of me / Swear it’s gone feel like you hit the lottery.”
Her bravado and the song’s delicious tension melts once she gets to the chorus, however. Warm synth notes join her there and cascade alongside layered backing vocals that swell against her own. “I’ma have you begging me for more (more),” she sings. “Tell me are you sure (more) / Begging me for more / Ready to go overboard.”
Just when the song seems to arrive at the climax, things switch up and take a turn for the ethereal. Piano takes the place of iyla’s vocal, as it rides out with the percussion for a few bars. Beautiful, distorted harmonies then join in to create a siren call of sorts as the sounds of the ocean return before it all eventually washes away in the strains of a final bit of guitar.
It’s safe to say that iyla knows what she’s doing as we cannot wait to hear more of whatever she’s got in store. Go “Overboard” with her when you press play below.
