Etta Bond is never afraid to make a ruckus, but she can also show a more vulnerable side. For every “Let Me Hit It” or “A1” in her catalog, there’s a tender song such as “Love Me Up” to back it up. But what happens when she combines those two sides? Well, perhaps something like her latest single “Let Me See Your Phone.”

The song — produced by Etta’s frequent collaborator Raf Riley — mixes the singer’s gruff and vulnerable sides on a ballad-paced mix of keys, kick, hand claps and a soft hi-hat. She uses the soundscape to play the role of suspicious girlfriend as she questions what her man might be hiding on his smartphone. The song opens with her demanding to see his phone in a tone that belies that she doesn’t really want to discover the truth. She uses the song to explain her waffling, letting the listener know that she sees the red flags but just can’t seem to let him go.

“You’re so predictable / But I’m addicted / Why did I pick him? / Not tryna play the victim / So predictable,” she sings on the refrain. “Knew what was coming / I should be running / I know I’m crazy, but I love him.”

While everyone knows that the minute you don’t trust someone you should be out the door, Etta’s honesty makes it easy to see why she would want to stay. It’s also easy to understand why this is one of the singer’s cuts that will linger with the listener long after the song fades out.
