Durand Bernarr came through winning when he dropped his newest album BLOOM this month. The collection shows that the singer-songwriter continues to evolve his sound and view while giving us the quality we know and love. He’s also being quite generous this go ’round by providing us with a visual for one of the album’s best cuts, “Overqualified.”

The song, which feels like an R&B cut from the late ’90s tailor-made to meet the current moment, deals with being ready for love but not finding anyone up to your standards. It’s a problem we’re sure many can relate to, especially with the state of dating being what it is.

With soulful production infused with a bit of a jazzy groove, Durand gets into the topic with his usual direct approach. He lists his qualities and qualifications, not shying away from how they can be perceived at times. Still, he can’t seem to find anyone on his level.

“Just can’t seem to get right / How the hell am I... / Overqualified?” he sings on the chorus. “How am I / All that you need in your life? / I clocked that overnight, I’m overqualified.”

He has a lot of fun with the song’s video as he invites a few friends — including personality Kid Fury, famed vocal coach Stevie Mackey and a few other recognizable faces — into his vision. We travel along with Durand as he works on himself while navigating the foolishness of the dating scene and professional life. He ultimately discovers that though he might be too much for some, he’s more than enough to stand in his own shine until someone meets him on his level.

“Overqualified,” along with previous single “Impact,” is an example of why BLOOM needs to join your record collection ASAP. Check out the video right here and then stream the album in full below.
