We’re expecting to hear a lot from singer-songwriter Mereba as she readies her upcoming album The Breeze Grew A Fire for release next month. Having already given us the set’s first single “Counterfeit,” the gifted artist is offering us another listen from the set while simultaneously showing love to her circle of friends with “Phone Me.”
Like the many odes to friendship that came before it, “Phone Me” is a heartfelt love letter to those who have held Mereba down throughout the years. She, along with co-producers Sam Hoffman and Black Samurai, crafts a dreamy, subdued groove for the track full of wistful guitar and warm synth bass which perfectly suits the song's lyrics.
“My n***a, you know you’re my sister / Since honey in the swishers / My homie, my homie, just phone me / Through the nitty gritty suicide missions,” she sings as she reminisces about the times they’ve had. “Few screws missing for my twinnem / My homie, my homie, just phone me.”
She doubles down on this message in the video by gathering a few of her nearest and dearest for some quality time. The clip begins with a photo collage of special moments captured of Mereba and friends throughout the years before we see her and her crew — which includes fellow singers Joyce Wrice, India Shawn and 6lack — as they unwind with drinks and good times. The camaraderie and the smiles are real and felt through the screen as Mereba pays loving tribute to the love she shares with each of them.
“This song is a sisterhood/friendship anthem dedicated to those classic bestie friendships that may have changed over the years, but are still cherished deeply,” the singer explained of the track in a press release. “The experiences we shared helped us shape our journeys and have confidence in our destinies. I just wanted a fun, joyful song celebrating my chosen sisters and brothers.”
We’re feeling the love over here and can’t wait to hear more from Mereba when The Breeze Grew A Fire releases on Friday, February 14th. Take a listen to “Phone Me” right here and then check out its video below.
